“The Runaway” appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post in 1958.
The artist American artist Norman Rockwell painted this picture from life – and the fine-assed cop was 29-year-old Massachusetts state trooper Staff Sgt Richard Clemens Jr.
The image is an American iconic and often mocked.

Knew the man in the CHP portrait [above] and stayed at his place in LA a couple of times. He kept the framed original prominently displayed on his living room wall. Belonged to the Black and Tans, and taught high school physics, if I remember right.
That’s his bike in the background, and the view from his driveway overlooking the city. One of several Tom models I knew and hung out with eons ago when I was a title holder. [Somebody’s Photoshopped Tom’s b and w original.]
